Male Victims of domestic violence

Domestic violence accounts for 16% of all reported violent crime and has more repeat victims than any other crime.

Some campaigners believe domestic violence against men is too often ignored, despite the fact that one in six men suffer domestic violence at some point in their lives.

It is difficult to find support agencies who provide services for male victims, is anyone aware of any?

Worcestershire Forum Against Domestic Abuse currently has a small multi-agency working party working to develop a one-day training course on the needs and experiences of male victims. We are lucky to have Stonham who provide male support workers and safe accommodation for male victims in our area. We would welcome contact from any agency or service that is working with male survivors or offering practitioner training.

National Standards for Domestic and Sexual Violence

I recently read with interest the article which appeared in the 'The Domestic Abuse Quaterly-Spring 2007' published by the Women's Aid Federation of England. The article entitled 'Male Victims and National Standards for Domestic and Sexual Violence' was written by Mark Coulter, Male Victims Development Officer for RESPECT. The author clearly identified a need to identify the 'predominant aggressor' in the context of domestic violence and that that determination should be based upon an holistic assessment of the framework of the relationship and a presumption that all the family members may be at risk. Men who access voluntary programmes as perpetrators often regard themselves to be victims.

Victim Of a Violent Lodger

Hello. I'm not sure if I have joined the correct forum, but if I have can anyone offer me advice on what to do with a violent and abusive lodger please.

I am a gay man in my late 40s and this lad is a straight lad in his early 20s.

if I ask him not to do certain things, or to comply with certain rules of the house, he raises his voice and ofetn lashes out at me. Either slapping me around my face, punching me in the face or kicking me.

I am so scared of him now I just do not know what to do. I want him to leave but he won't and I fear if i get the Police involved he will becaome even more violent or damage my property.

Please help someone as I am at my wits end now.

On the basis of what you have said it would appear that this situation does not constitute domestic violence. You have certain rights being the owner of the property. I take the point that you are fearful of the consequences of involving the Police which I would suggest may be the most appropriate course of action in the circumstances. A secondary course of action may be to seek legal advice on what other course of action may be available to you?

Community Based Perpetrator Programmes

Included in the implementation plan for the Doncaster component of the South Yorkshire Specialist Domestic Violence Court programme is the development of a community based domestic violence perpetrator programme based on the recommendations of the nationally recognised RESPECT prgramme and the mandatory Integrated Domestic Abuse Programme currently being administered by the National
Probation Service. The expectation is that this initiative will be undertaken in the 1st quarter of 2008. Any advice or detail of programmes currently being undertaken in this area of work would be
appreciated.
