sexual violence and domestic violence

Why is sexual violence not recognised as a part of domestic violence on your web site.? I have been involved in two violent relationships where i was forced to perform  sexual acts  against my will if i didnt do as i was told or i upset him.

Tackling Sexual Violence

In June 2006 the Home Office produced a document entitled ' Tackling Sexual Violence: Guidance for Local Partnerships'. This has now been enhanced by the publication in April 2007 of the document ' Cross Government Action Plan on Sexual Violence and Abuse' . The latter was produced following consultation and in association with, HM Government, Chief Police Officers, Crown Prosecution Service, Her Majesty's Court Service, National Offender Management Service , Voluntary and Community Sector. Within this document is a requirment for local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships to produce a strategy to address issues of sexual violence and abuse that are identified within the Community. Safer Doncaster Partnership is responding to this by setting up a group comprising of key agencies, with the Doncaster Domestic Violence Working Party having a significant and pivotal role to play in the process. This arrangment will ensure that sexual violence, or abuse committed in the circumstances of domestic violence will have greater focus while addressing all other aspects of these crimes.

Sexual Violence and Domestic Violence

Hi Kezzy,
It is recognised that are clear links between Sexual Violence and Domestic Violence and that is the reason why here in Doncaster the Independent Sexual Violence Advisor works in close partnership with the Independent Domestic Violence Advocate. It is also aknowledged that victims of sexual violence perpetrated by a current or former partner are likely to be victims of the most severe forms of domestic violence. Both our roles involve working in a multi-agency setting to provide advice and signposting, practical and emotional support, risk assesment and safety planning for our victims. If you require help and support please contact me (details posted on this web site). I hope this has been helpful.

Sexual Violence

Hi Kezzy, welcome to the dvforum.
We recognise that 'Sexual' violence can be just as hurtful as 'physical' violence and often has longer term effects on the victim (and the victim's children) than physical violence.
Sexual violence is recognised as domestic violence both in this forum and also by it's member agencies, and most statutory agencies have adopted a common definition, not just in Doncaster but nationally which includes sexual violence;
'any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults, aged 18 and over, who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender and sexuality.'
... and in fact Doncaster has recently appointed a ISVA (Independent Sexual Violence Adviser) who works to support those who are, or have, suffered sexual abuse - see her entry in the Support & Help section.
Our website is new, and we are still building up it's content, but I am sure that in time we will cover this in more detail.
